Chieftain: Desz (Pronounced Dez)
History: Once led by the overzealous, even bigoted at times, Ferrarus, the Gadgix clan has always devoted itself to the studying of technology. Believing it to be a superior means of defense than simple brute force, most in this clan aren’t very physically imposing. Ferrarus believed in this cause so much, that when Gladius was inducting Natalie and her clan into the Valka Fae – he challenged her to a fight to the death. The fact that he also thought of her as sub fairy filth may have also played a role in this challenge. As with most fights of this nature, it was a highly public spectacle in which Natalie emerged victorious, however she opted not to kill Ferrarus; stating that she didn’t waste her time or her appetite on the weak.
Infuriated by her refusal to kill him after his weakness was made public, he orchestrated a plan to kidnap Natalie’s daughter Relina, and force her into an unfair fight elsewhere. Desz, his second in command at the time, alerted Natalie to the plot – which enabled her to turn the tables entirely on Ferrarus’s plot. Enraged by the attempt on her daughter, Natalie used her full power to utterly crush him in the rematch. Thereafter she devoured him, after hours of playing with him and teasing him with various things, such as chocolate. After the plot was made public, his son and everyone else involved were exiled from the spire, while Desz was promoted to be the new chieftain and given the opportunity to promote someone else to her “lieutenant”.
After that, she suddenly vanished without a trace, and most of her clan along with her. There was a note which eluded to a temporary self-exile – for the clan to find itself, and really rebuild anew after its former leader brought such disgrace. Lately, the Gadgix have started to return to Valkyrus (the inter-dimensional Valka Fae Spire) and word of their chieftain and lieutenant’s return has the entire community abuzz…
Threat Level: Low to Moderate-While the females are still very much man-eating, they spend a lot of time around humans and other species (generally disguised), working odd jobs as guides, mercenaries, soldiers, assassins, and many other things where their “unique” skillset and abilities may be useful. As a result, many Gadgix have very specific predation rules, and most have sworn off humans and the like all together. This also means they don’t run around picking or seeking fights, like those of Natalie’s clan would.
Their near obsession with new tech, also makes them easy to deal with should one ever find themselves the subject of a Gadgix’s hunger. They will almost always opt for the technology over devouring the person with it – even after getting it from that person they won’t harm them.
Habits: Tinkering and theorizing is what most Gadgix spend their time doing. If not that, then whatever job they’ve taken up – they tend to be very meticulous with mastering that and bettering themselves at it.
Techniques: Varies widely from fairy to fairy. They do, however, all make use of a similar tech they refer to as ether generators. In most cases, this allows them to channel, transfer, and use the magic their wings have plus that in their bodies and in the atmosphere to power their devices. As a result, Gadgix don’t use completed spells in combat at all – they use the raw energy behind the magic instead. The only exception to this is shrinking and growth spells of course. Without magic, or a great understanding of how Gadgix technology works, one cannot hope to use their own weapons against them. Disarming a Gadgix does not render them harmless at all, but rather now you’re dealing with a Felaryan fairy with combat training and a willingness to use it…
Valkyrus, Natalie, Desz, Relina, and anything else related would be minez ^_^the first of several Valka Clan spotlights - to detail the histories of each clan and some of it's reason for existing. I plan on doing one for each clan, followed by a spotlight for it's leader. I would ask that anyone interested in making a Valka Fae follow that format for the character description
I figured'd i do the Gadgix first, because i'm changing up their lore
Felarya is property of , any other mentions are property of their respective owners
The fact Daez was working to aid Natalie, and then afterword became the leader of the clan himself, is definitely worthy of note.
It wouldn't matter what Ferrarus did, when he caused Natalie to tap her true potential she was so far out of his league i can't even quantify it.
I have no accusations toward Natalie and know much less about her than I’ve seen of Ralina, and again when I say I know very little of Ralina herself I mean I’ve read a handful of stories that depict her and don’t entirely know which are out-dated, which aspects are still factual, and what has either been completely re-done or is planned to be re-done in a future update. Though what little I have seen indicates racism and cowardice in how she goes about her combat and hunting tactics.
Unless … This line from chapter 5:
Ordinarily where normal humans were concerned she wouldn’t waste her time taunting them and scaring them; she’d just gobble them up and move on.
If out-dated and she’s no longer in the habit of murdering any random stranger she comes across who happens to share similar enough qualities to be mistaken for a human (or approximate humanoid) without word and on a whim, then my assessment is clearly false. Likewise the opposite end, if she finds it perfectly acceptable to slaughter off random groups of fairies, without a word, and on a whim, then she is indeed treating both on equal terms and my assumptions are incorrect. I’ve not yet seen evidence of her devouring fairies, despite every indication that there is nothing stopping her and that if she were to start doing so it would be less cowardly than her depictions in this small handful I’ve read through so far. Would theoretically fir the character given the way she’s described, as a fairy will almost always be a more difficult challenge and put up a harder fight than a human will. And fairies, if attacked, are theoretically more likely to run away when injured, and have greater capacity to flee while doing so. At least an ordinary one. Giving her yet more reason to want to kill them and feel the wings flutter inside her bell.
Hmm … yeah that would fit way too well. Thus far I’ve only seen her teasing and torturing smaller people, and people who have no hope of even coming close to matching her raw capacity, and while her hunting another predator would prove to be a remarkably interesting fight I would have been shocked upon first seeing it if not for any comment that spoils the moment.
Likewise, this story which hosts one of the better combat scenes in Asuroth’s gallery: (which to anyone reading this comment, I would recommend checking her stuff out)
Depicts Ralina as acting completely differently toward the giant Drider Ciel (someone much closer to her physical capabilities) than she does the small band of humans, none of whom can even affect her in any meaningful way. Or if they can, it’s not shown, and Ralina herself goes to great pains to make sure its explicitly clear how little she has to fear from them.
Toward the humans she’s taunting, she’s threatening, she’s dismissive and mocks the idea that they would even try to stand up to her, every time one of them expresses suffering she’s right there smiling. Drinking in how miserable they all are and how hopeless their situation is. All an act, as its revealed at the end, but that isn’t treating the small adventurer’s with much respect. Ordinarily I’d withhold assessment to see if she’s any different toward people of her own level of power, but then we have Ciel present in the same story, and put into the same conditions: The role of a challenger fighting Ralina as part of a deal.
With the humans she was constantly mentioning how she’d murder them after the fight, that their bravest fighter was going to die for their sake. With Ciel? She didn’t mention eating the drider even once. She’s theoretically capable of doing so, she has enough power that she won’t even have to taste the drider if Ciel’s flavor was an issue given she can just teleport people directly into her stomach (unless that aspect of her bio sheet was retconned at some point, I’ll catch up eventually I assure you) and if racism didn’t apply then Ciel the drider was almost entirely identical to the axe wielding warrior exhausted on the ground. Someone in way over her head, someone Ralina has to hold back against lest she win instantly, and someone who was in the middle of a spar that could have been deadly for them, yet Ralina herself was entirely exempt from any possible harm.
When Ralina won the match in this story, the deal was …. The humans die. Not Ciel dies, despite taking the place of the human soldier. Ciel was under no threat, under no danger from Ralina, and could safely accept defeat without fear of Ralina devouring her. Or even threatening to devour her. Ciel is treated with respect, Ciel is treated like an opponent, Ciel is treated like an equal. The human explorers who are putting themselves at greater risk, facing off against much tougher challenges, and being put through far much more fear they have to steel themselves against, are treated like mere tokens. Like snacks, little more than a talking cookie whom Ralina toys with and abuses because she knows she can get away with it.
I am fully aware of the problems with my assessment and how unfair I’m being, having jumped to a conclusion before reading everything available about the character to compose a final thought, largely because there’s a lot to read and I’d rather express what each piece of literature describes as I read along. A bit more enjoyable to take the tale in one chunk at a time than the whole mess at once, retcons and all.
The first is that just as you’ve stated before the things I’m pointing out aren’t cannon anymore, the character has changed, the past has been re-written, I can expect future iterations to be less cruel. The second is that this story with Ciel was written by someone else, and regardless of whether its authored by someone else entirely or simply co-authored, there will always be problems in how a character is depicted between one writer and the next. There could simply have been a miscommunication, or the things that were written weren’t intended to be interpreted in the way I’m seeing it.
The solution to my own misgivings is to keep reading, obviously, and however unusual or flat-out incorrect my take-away of her was I hope these points illustrate where I would make the assumption she acts in a racist manner, or that if either of these points weren’t the intention then such could be kept in mind for later workings, or even arguments between Ralina and some character in-story who’s critical of her.
My OC EmberJoy comes from a technologically advanced space-faring race that doesn't believe in magic They have a lot of trouble making their arm-mounted fusion-powered pico-maniupulator work once they crash-land on Felarya, and I was thinking that a fey obsessed with technology would be just the thing to help/hinder/drive them insane... and now I'm sure of it!
I look forward to reading more about the clans and their leaders
Desz is actually a fairy of honor, and Natalie had taken her in at one point before she ended up in Valkyrus. So they had a history - Natalie was almost like a mother to her, as she is with many.
Oh i can't wait to see how that plays out!
It's good to know more about Desz and Natalie... If Nat's like a mom to her, then kidnapping Nat's daughter is almost like stealing Desz's little sister... and that ain't right.
The technology that the Gadgix use, allows them to fight on the level of Natalie's clan. They augment and boost their strength in major ways.
Natalie's chocolate torture would have be the equivalent of water boarding with chocoalate - in and out of her mouth... for hours... and hours.
